Classic Young Adult Books

Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables was written by L. M. Montgomery and published in 1908. Since then, it has sold over 50 million copies worldwide.

Anne of Green Gables is a book for young adults which follows the story of an orphan girl, Anne Shirley, who was adopted into the home of the siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. This classic is a tried and true coming-of-age story about acceptance and struggles with equality.

Little Women

Little Women, written by Louisa May Alcott, was published in the 1960s. This novel was then adapted into movies over several generations.

Little Women is a novel that follows the lives of four teenage sisters. Of the sisters, Jo is the most influential character. Her boyish, creative nature became an outline of femininity and what it means for female character creation and development for future novels to come.

Twilight

The Twilight book series, created by Stephenie Mayers, is the contemporary YA series that became the blueprint for hundreds of young adult romance books.

The author centred the Twilight series around the main protagonist Bella and her complicated relationship with Edward, a vampire, and Jacob, a werewolf. Starting as a fanfiction, the Twilight series has gathered what persons could only describe as a cult following. This book is an interesting, and perhaps controversial, take on supernatural romance.

A Court of Thorns and Roses

A Court of Thorns and Roses is yet another contemporary Young Adult romance series. This romance series has become a topic of interest amongst YA book lovers.

The author Sarah J. Maas created A Court of Thorns and Roses. The fairytale Beauty and the Beast inspired the first book of this series. Over the course of the series, the protagonist Feyre faces many hard choices, including who she wants to give her heart to. This book is another interesting example of the fantasy young adult genre.

Underrated Young Adult Books

Followers

Followers is a novel that merges both the young adult and satire genres, a combination seen in the YA world. This book, though, proves that this challenging to master combination can be done, and done well.

Followers is a book for young adults written by Raziel Reid. This book follows the hectic life of Lilly. Her life seems to be a series of unfortunate events after the police arrested her after a bad date, got her mugshots leaked, then got kicked out by her mom. After her superstar aunt offers to take her in, Lilly wonders what’s real and what’s for the cameras.

The Whitsun Daughters

A blend of contemporary and historical writing is what The Whitsun Daughters is about. How the author merges two different time periods makes for a very interesting and fresh read.

Carrie Mesrobian is the author of the young adult ghost story. The book follows the lives of three Whitsun daughters dealing with contemporary issues, like teenage pregnancy and the patriarchy. However, the ghost of Jane Murphy, a girl who lived where the Whitsun daughters now live a century ago, is the narrator of the story.
